When a storm or other disaster leaves you with water damage, you need to call in the experts. Most home owners don't know who to call in this kind of situation. Fortunately, we can help.

The first step in handling water damage is always to call in an expert. The structure of the home can be severely damaged if not treated as soon as possible, so a delay can be disastrous. Once you have contacted someone, there are things that you can do while you wait to help minimize the damage to your home.

Most home owners don't know what they should do. If you make a mistake, you could cause more damage or even put yourself in danger. Follow these six tips to get through your water damage event with as little complications as possible.

• Electricity and water don't mix. Outlets, wiring within walls, electronics, and appliances can be electrocution hazards. If possible to do so safely, turn off the power to the home and unplug electronics and appliances. Don't use any electrical objects until a water damage mitigation expert has given the clear. Do not enter a room with standing water, especially if it has reached the level of the outlets.

• Water damage weakens the structural supports in your home. Be cautious around wet ceilings, walls, and shelving. Collapsing and falling debris can cause serious injury.

• Raw sewage can bring infection and disease that may even result in death. At all costs, avoid raw sewage and areas that may have come in contact with it.

• If you can do so safely, determine the source of the water damage. If it is due to flooding, heavy rain, or other weather conditions, you may be able to prevent more water infiltration with tarps, sandbags, and other items. If the cause is burst or damaged pipes, shutting off the source can prevent further damage.

• If you can safely enter the home, move valuable to a secure location. Create a careful inventory list of any damaged items, and document with photographs or video. Documents and other paper items should be photographed before moving if they have come in contact with water. If they cannot be saved the information can be reproduced.

• If possible, electrical appliances and electronics should be unplugged and removed. It may be necessary to shut off power to the entire home. Be very cautious, and do not enter standing water if there is still a power source.

Water damage can cause major damage to your home. The structural supports can be weakened and your possessions might be damaged or destroyed. The wrong moves can cause increased problems, but if you take the right steps you can minimize the potential issues can help get your home back in good condition as soon as possible.

Most home owners will never have to cope with severe water damage. Unfortunately, it can happen at any time without warning. If you are forearmed with a bit of knowledge, you can take action to minimize the damage done to your home while you wait for the experts to arrive.
